A Trip to “Somewhere”

Our group at the Main Street Deli

Live theatre is magical, transporting an audience to another time, another place. Students in the 6:1:2 class at Westview in the Department for Exceptional Children experienced the power of the performing arts during a November field trip to see Geva Theatre’s production of “Somewhere.”

“Somewhere” focuses on an immigrant Puerto Rican family in 1959 Manhattan and their hopes for stardom in the Broadway musical “West Side Story.” They struggle to make their dreams come true, even as their troubles seem to stack up around them. “The students loved the play,” said teacher Kim Stephenson. “They could relate to many of the challenges and especially to the family’s culture of taking care of their own.”

Students also enjoyed a delicious pre-theatre brunch, courtesy of the great folks at the Main Street Deli in Churchville (and Westview SBA Bryan Barth who helped make the connections). The deli opened early and invited class members to order whatever they wanted, and they did – breakfast sandwiches, subs or hot dogs with fruit smoothies and hot cocoa! “Students were very appreciative of the wonderful experience the deli staff and owners gave them,” said Stephenson.

World class music, dancing and drama plus great food and time with friends – it was a very special day for our Westview students.
